Distinguished and Famous people from Darwin City
🎨 Harold Thomas
Artist Harold Thomas is best known for designing the Aboriginal flag in 1971, but his work also includes painting and portraiture. His Darwin associations include exhibitions in the city and appointment as an official Northern Territory government portrait artist in 1987. Portraits of administrators and chief ministers became part of Parliament House’s collection. Born in Alice Springs and trained in Adelaide, he developed a wider artistic career with a substantial Darwin chapter. The familiar flag is one part of that much broader body of work.
🏑 Nova Peris
Darwin-born Nova Peris became the first Indigenous Australian to win an Olympic gold medal as a member of the Hockeyroos at Atlanta in 1996. She subsequently competed internationally in athletics, demonstrating a rare ability to reach the highest level in two sports. Her public career took another direction when she was elected to the Senate in 2013, becoming the first Aboriginal woman elected to federal parliament. Her Darwin beginnings form part of a life that crossed sporting codes and then moved into national political representation.
